CompetitionAnd the winner is... My winner for the January–February competition is Ross Cormack with his story 'The Hospedaje', about a particularly uncomfortable showering experience in Chile. I loved this story partly for its humour and self-deprecation, but also because it concentrates on one tiny aspect of a journey – a horrible shower – rather than trying to encapsulate vast swathes of terrain. Additionally, of course, hideous bathroom experiences are very much a part of off-the-beaten-track travel, so his shower was something I could relate to easily, and enjoyed laughing about as I sat in my comfortable chair in my nice, warm, flat, knowing that my own fully functional shower is just a few steps away and ready to use whenever I feel like it. Enough of my blathering. Ross wins the Bradt guide of his choice, and you can read his story here. And remember, even if you didn't win a guide this time, you can buy any Bradt guide at a 20% discount via its website. And please, do keep on entering. I genuinely love reading these stories of other people's travel experiences, so keep them coming.
Enter March–April's competition The next deadline is the last day of April. The rules The idea behind the competition is this: people are always emailing me with lurid tales of their travel experiences, and frankly some of them are more extraordinary, hilarious and outright offbeat than anything I've ever dared do. So I've thrown down the gauntlet. Email me at polly@pollyevans.com and tell me the tale of your funniest, quirkiest, otherwise most extraordinary travel experience. Entries should be less than 500 words (or even shorter - 200 words would be fine or, if you're really good, a single cracking sentence). Each month I'll select the best and post it here on this site. And that's not all. Thanks to those brilliant folk at Bradt, the author of the best piece each month will be rewarded with the Bradt Guide of their choice.
